How FlowGrow works

FlowGrow is a recirculating vertical hydroponic tower. Nutrient-rich water is pumped to the top of the tower, flows gently past the roots, then returns to the reservoir to be reused.

1. Add water + nutrients
Fill the reservoir and mix in your FlowGrow nutrients.

2. Water flows from the top
The pump lifts nutrient-rich water through the internal hose to the flow cap at the top.

3. Roots absorb what they need
Water gently flows down through the tower while plant roots absorb moisture, nutrients, and oxygen.

4. Water returns to the base
Unused water returns to the reservoir to be reused again through the system.

QUESTIONS WE HEAR MOST OFTEN.

Good to know

Is FlowGrow aeroponic or NFT?

FlowGrow is best described as a recirculating vertical hydroponic system.

It is not a true aeroponic system, because the roots are not suspended and misted, and it is not a traditional NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) system, where water flows through horizontal channels.

Instead, a pump lifts nutrient-rich water to the Flow Cap at the top of the tower. The water flows gently past the plant roots before returning to the reservoir to be reused, creating an efficient recirculating growing system.

How often does the pump run?

For everyday growing, set the timer to run for 1 minute on and 30 minutes off. During particularly hot weather, this can be increased to 5 minutes on and 30 minutes off if your plants need additional moisture.

How much water should I add?

The reservoir holds up to 20 litres, but we recommend filling it with around 15 litres. This provides plenty of water for the system while leaving room for the returning flow and making the reservoir easier to maintain.

Does the tower need a grow light?

Not always. FlowGrow grows best in a bright location. A grow light is only recommended when there isn't enough natural light available, such as indoors away from a sunny window. Towers placed in a bright indoor position or a sheltered outdoor location may not need additional lighting.

How often should I refresh the reservoir?

Top up the water as your plants use it, and replace the nutrient solution approximately every 2–3 weeks. This helps maintain a healthy balance of water and nutrients for consistent growth.

Can the timer be left in the rain?

No. The timer and electrical connections should always be kept dry and protected from the weather. If your tower is outdoors, place the timer and power connections under cover or inside a suitable weather-protected enclosure.

Can I grow fruiting plants like tomatoes?

Yes. The extra growing space makes the 9 Layer Tower ideal for a mix of leafy greens, herbs and fruiting plants. Switch to FlowGrow Bloom Nutrients once plants begin flowering to encourage healthy flowers and fruit, and provide support for larger plants as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

A few helpful things to know

Is this a good option if I’ve never grown anything before?

Yes. FlowGrow is designed to feel approachable for first-time growers while still supporting long-term growing as your confidence builds.

Many people start with herbs and leafy greens before experimenting with other plants over time.

Where should I place it?

FlowGrow grows best in a bright indoor position or sheltered outdoor area with good natural light.

A sunny window, covered patio, deck, or balcony can all work well depending on conditions.

Can I use it indoors?

Yes, provided the tower receives enough natural sunlight. Bright indoor spaces tend to work best for herbs and leafy greens.

If natural light is limited, compatible grow lights may also help support growth.

How noisy is the pump?

The pump runs quietly and is designed for home environments. Most people notice only the gentle sound of flowing water, similar to a small water feature.

How much power does the system use?

The FlowGrow tower uses a small low-voltage pump connected to a 12V power adaptor. Power consumption is very low — typically less than a small household light bulb.

What can I grow in it?

FlowGrow is ideal for leafy greens, herbs, strawberries and many compact vegetables. With the right care and support, you can also grow fruiting plants such as tomatoes, chillies and capsicums using FlowGrow Bloom Nutrients once they begin flowering.

Can I extend my tower later?

Yes. FlowGrow extension sections are available separately if you’d like to expand your growing space over time.
